March 23 – World Meteorological Day

19/03/2012. The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and its member states celebrate March 23 as the World Meteorological Day each year. The Republic of Azerbaijan acceded to the Convention of WMO in 1993, and now carries out international and regional data exchange, and performs the decisions approved by WMO by observing all requirements of this Convention.
The World Meteorological Organization established in Vienna in September, 1873, which is a specialized agency of the United Nations since 1951, is a successor of one of the oldest international organizations i.e. International Meteorological Organization (IMO).The World Meteorological Day is traditionally celebrated under different slogans each year. This year’s motto of “air, climate and water are key powers of the future” has been chosen to manifest the exceptional role of the information concerning air, climate and water for social-economic sectors.
The catchword of “air, climate and water are key powers of the future” is connected with the execution of decision adopted in the 16th Congress of WMO for the set-up of Global Framework for Climate Services from 2012. 4 priority ways of the Global Framework for Climate Services were determined in this Congress: minimization of the effects of natural disasters, water resources, health and food safety.
In October 2012 in Geneva it was decided to hold WMO’s 17th extraordinary session on the issues regarding the minimization of the damage inflicted as a result of hydrometeorological natural disasters by 2012, twofold reduction of human casualties in relation to the years of 1994-2003, and etc.
Utilization of operative and routine hydrometeorological data, as well as forecasts and warnings in various economic, agricultural, construction, aviation, navigation, power engineering and etc. spheres bears great fruit and provides a sustainable development. The National Hydrometeorology Department of the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources (MENR) supplies the observation networks with cutting-edge appliances and equipments, automatic weather stations which provide an operative transmission and use of observations along with their quality indicators.
Notwithstanding, it is impossible to manage weather condition, regular observations, forecasts and alerts with more accuracy can pave the way for relatively suitable and safe life. Thus, needs for a qualitative hydrometeorological service in all economic sectors for the purpose of reasonable attenuation of natural disasters are observed, which make the role of hydrometeorological services peerless
